The Estate Information Return: A Guide for Ontario Executors
The Estate Information Return is a form Ontario executors file with the Ministry of Finance after probate. It lists the estate's assets and their values, so the province can check that the right Estate Administration Tax was paid.
When it is due
Within 180 calendar days after the estate certificate is issued
Required even when the estate is $50,000 or less and no tax is owed
An amended return is due within 60 days of learning that information was incomplete or wrong
What goes in it
Real estate in Ontario, with values and any mortgages
Bank accounts and investments
Vehicles and boats
Business interests
Other personal property, such as jewellery, art and household items
Common mistakes
Waiting too long to get appraisals and account balances
Including assets that passed outside the estate, such as jointly held accounts
Leaving out assets discovered later without filing an amendment
Using rough estimates without supporting documents
Why it matters
The Ministry can audit returns, and penalties may apply to late or inaccurate filings. Keeping clear records from day one makes the return straightforward.
